Brief description: The RESECT project developed a software platform for assessing the resectability of prostate cancer. As a software prototype, the platform enables initial personalized treatment recommendations and precise, automated diagnostics for patients with prostate cancer. The aim is to harmonize clinical workflows and provide valuable multidisciplinary data to support optimized image interpretation and treatment planning.

The RESECT project developed a software platform for assessing the resectability of prostate cancer. As a software prototype, the platform enables initial personalized treatment recommendations and precise, automated diagnostics for patients with prostate cancer. This is intended to harmonize clinical workflows and provide valuable multidisciplinary data for optimized image interpretation and treatment planning. The aim is to improve treatment decisions for patients with prostate cancer and potentially reduce costs in the healthcare sector. 

The software solution developed as part of RESECT is intended to support AI-based personalized treatment planning in the future. It combines automated quantitative image analysis and tumor characterization with multimodal clinical information and optimizes the prediction of clinically relevant endpoints, such as predicting resection status or determining whether nerve-sparing surgery is appropriate. 

This is intended to support optimal treatment decisions while sustainably reducing costs and treatment-related side effects. The innovation potential created by the project also provides a foundation for developing, testing, and translating new clinical decision-support systems into innovative products more quickly and as close to clinical practice as possible. 

The project was led by the Department of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at University Medical Center Mannheim, Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University.
