Digital health literacy

Digital health literacy is the ability to understand, assess, and use health-related, digitally enabled information and technologies. This includes, for example, being able to independently assess and decide which digital options to use, which data to share with third parties, or how to manage health data collected through an app.

Healthcare professionals, for instance, face both technical and personal challenges when using video consultations, medical consultations, or data transfer. An individual’s ability to manage their own health therefore also depends on the digital competencies of both the individual and the healthcare professionals involved in their treatment or care.

Well-developed digital health literacy is therefore an important building block for effective and needs-based healthcare, particularly in the healthcare system of the future.
