Distributed Artificial Intelligence for the Operating Room – DAIOR
Highly complex surgical procedures can be performed more safely and precisely with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). However, in order to significantly improve patient care, AI algorithms first need to be extensively trained using suitable data. By applying federated learning methods, AI algorithms can be trained using data from different locations, even across national borders, while the data remains at the respective sites and data protection is ensured.
With these clinically impactful use cases and the planned AI ecosystem, DAIOR aims to establish the operating room of the future within the hospital of the future — a digitally connected environment capable of continuously receiving, transmitting, and processing knowledge.
The project contributes to the development of practical distributed AI methods and the establishment of a sustainable scientific and technological cooperation structure. It also promotes German-French collaboration in the field of AI in healthcare.

Funding agency
The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR). The funding initiative is part of the implementation of the German Federal Government’s AI Strategy and the High-Tech Strategy 2025. In Germany, the bilateral funding initiative is administered by the DLR Project Management Agency, while in France it is administered by the French National Research Agency (ANR).
